The staff of the Transportation Department of Gloucester Township Public Schools welcomes you. It is our job to provide safe and reliable school transportation to all of the students of Gloucester Township schools. Our staff of over 100 employees transports more than 11,000 Pre-K through eighth grade students as well as high school students twice daily.

The site will provide valuable information about your child’s bus service. We have tried to include answers to the most frequently asked questions. Should you have any concerns or questions regarding your child’s transportation that are not answered here, please feel free to call the Transportation Department. We will make every effort to insure that your child’s school bus ride will be the safest and most convenient for your child and for you. Transportation is provided for students who do not live within walking areas described in Board policy. All kindergarten students are bused.

In compliance with State law, all buses built after September 8, 1992 are equipped with seat belts.

General Information

Gloucester Township School buses are equipped with seat belts. Children are required by State Law to wear their seat belts at all times.

Lost & Found: If your child should leave something on the bus, we will either keep it on the bus in order to return it to the child or take it to the school office.

If your child will not be riding the bus (due to illness, parent transport, etc.) please notify Transportation at (856) 227-7688 extension 4401. We will inform your driver that your child will be absent from the bus.

We will do our best to accommodate emergency situations that might require your child changing buses or pick-up and drop-off points for the current day. Please send your written request to school. The principal must approve any changes.

On the Bus Stop

The bus driver trains the children in how to ride the bus safely and how to wait for the bus safely. Please do not supersede the driver’s instruction to your child. This can confuse him/her and there may come a time when you cannot be at the bus stop. In this way, your child consistently observes the same rules.

Bus drivers do not have the authority to change bus stops. Your child is only permitted to stop at approved bus stops. Please do not ask your driver to pick your child up in front of your home. Due to the number of students transported daily, it is impossible to stop at everyone’s home or to enable all parents to see the bus stop from their door. Bus stops are designed to be at the safest spot on your street where no child is walking an unreasonable distance. If you feel your child’s bus stop is unsafe or an unreasonable walking distance, you may put your request in writing and send it into your child’s school principal. Once we receive your letter, we will investigate your concerns and notify you of the decision.

On the Bus Stop (Pre-K and Kindergarten)

An approved adult must be present to meet preschool students at the bus stop. An approved adult is a parent or an emergency contact listed on your child’s emergency card. We must have written permission from you to release you child to anyone else. Otherwise, the bus driver must return your child to school and you will be required to pick him/her up there.

Problems on the Bus

Please call your child’s school of attendance if your child is having a problem on the bus. Your bus driver needs to adhere to their schedule and cannot discuss personal situations at the bus stop.

In order that the Gloucester Township Transportation Department operate in an efficient manner, it will be necessary for the Board of Education to follow an act concerning transportation of pupils to and from school, Section 18A:25-2 of the New Jersey statutes.

Operation

1. A teacher or other person in authority over such pupil shall hold every pupil accountable for disorderly conduct in school and during recess and on the playgrounds of the school and on the way to and from school.

2. The driver shall be in full charge of the school bus at all times and shall be responsible for order; he shall never exclude a pupil from the bus, but if unable to manage any pupil, shall report the unmanageable pupil to the principal of the school which he attends.

3. A pupil may be excluded from the bus for disciplinary reasons by the principal and his parents shall provide for his transportation to and from school during the period of exclusion.

Regulations

1. Transportation is provided in accordance with State Law for children living remote from the school, at public expense.

2. Children are entitled to this, provided they do not infringe upon another child's rights.

3. The safety of all children riding school buses is of utmost importance. Therefore, pupils assigned to a school bus must obey the following rules:

   • Children, upon boarding a bus shall immediately be seated.

   • Children shall remain seated until bus has come to a full stop at their destination.

   • Children shall at all times keep their entire bodies within the bus.

   • Hazing of any sort or type shall not be permitted.

   • Unnecessary noise, shouting or objectionable language shall not be permitted.

   • Throwing of objects within the bus or out of bus windows shall not be permitted.

   • Damage to buses by children while in transit shall not be tolerated. Payment for repair of all damage incurred by children shall be the responsibility of the parents of the children involved.

   • Children shall ride their assigned bus and get on and off at their designated stop.

   • Children must follow bus drivers instructions for entering and exiting buses safely.

   • Any behavior endangering health and safety of passengers shall not be permitted.

4. Any infraction of the above shall be handled in accordance with Board Policy and Regulations:5600 and, at the discretion of the school principal, may include the following sanctions:

   • Parent letter of warning of exclusion

   • Parent letter advising of one day exclusion

   • Parent letter advising of three day exclusion

   • Parent letter advising of five day exclusion

   • Parent letter advising of ten day exclusion

   • Parent letter advising of remainder of year exclusion

5. Principals shall take great care in investigation of all complaints. Where possible, names and statements of witnesses should be obtained for verification.

6. In all cases, parents must be contacted prior to any exclusion. During a period of exclusion, the parents are responsible for the transportation of the student to and from school.
